Doula Support is a strategic investment in employee health

Expanded doula support is now available to eligible UnitedHealthcare members. Learn why this matters.

As the U.S. continues to face the highest maternal mortality rate among high-income countries,1 coupled with the fact that most pregnancy-related deaths are considered preventable,2 employers have a critical opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of their workforce while strengthening their organization’s health outcomes and bottom line.

That's why UnitedHealthcare is expanding its doula offering over 2026 to approximately 7.2M members enrolled in eligible employer-sponsored health plans.

“We believe that everyone deserves meaningful support through their maternity journey,” said Rebecca Madsen, chief executive officer of advocacy for behavioral and clinical for UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual. “Expanding doula access may help give more people personalized, whole-person support.”

Doula Support services represent a proven, evidence-based intervention that can transform the maternity experience for employees.3 Research has demonstrated that doula support services have been shown to help reduce preterm births and Caesarean deliveries, increase breastfeeding rates and help people feel more supported and satisfied with their maternity care.4

Perhaps most compelling for employers concerned about employee mental health is that studies show a 57% decrease in postpartum anxiety and depression among people who have access to doula services.5

These outcomes matter not only for the health and well-being of employees and their families, but also for organizational performance. When employees experience better birth outcomes and reduced postpartum complications, employers may benefit from lower health care costs, shorter medical leaves, improved productivity and stronger employee retention.

What Doula Support offers employees

Doulas serve as an advocate and dedicated support companion, focused primarily on guiding the birthing parent while also addressing the needs of the newborn. Their role includes helping families prepare for labor, offering guidance throughout delivery and recovery, and supporting coordination of newborn care.

Unlike clinical care providers who manage multiple patients and focus on medical interventions, doulas provide continuous, personalized support throughout the entire maternity journey. This whole-person approach addresses the emotional, physical and educational needs that can be overlooked in traditional maternity care.

Doula Support is being rolled out in phases and is currently available nationwide to eligible employer health plans. Throughout 2026, availability will continue to expand to additional employer groups, and, by Jan. 1, 2027, approximately 7.2M members may have access to the offering if included as part of their employer’s plan.

The ROI of doula support

In an era when attracting and retaining talent requires comprehensive, meaningful benefits, doula support represents a strategic investment that delivers measurable value for both employees and employers. By addressing one of America’s most pressing health care challenges — maternal health outcomes — employers can demonstrate their commitment to employee well-being while potentially reducing health care costs and improving organizational performance.
