Mass General Brigham

An update regarding our network relationship with Mass General Brigham

We have reached a multi-year agreement that provides continued network access to Mass General Brigham’s (MGB) hospitals and facilities, including ancillary locations, employed specialists and employed primary care physicians (PCPs) for people enrolled in the following UnitedHealthcare plans:

  • Employer-sponsored commercial plans
  • Senior Care Options (SCO) and One Care plans

However, people enrolled in UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage individual and Group Retiree plans will no longer have network access to many of MGB’s PCPs, effective Jan. 1, 2026

This change is due to how MGB is restructuring its participation in Medicare Advantage

While many MGB PCPs will no longer participate in our Medicare Advantage network, people enrolled in our Medicare Advantage individual and Group Retiree plans will continue to have network access to the following MGB providers on and after Jan. 1, 2026:

  • Hospitals
  • Specialists
  • Labs
  • Home health agencies
  • Visiting nurse associations (VNAs)
  • Ancillary provider locations

PCPs affiliated with MGB’s Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and Martha’s Vineyard Hospital will also continue to be part of our network for Medicare Advantage individual and Group Retiree plans

All other MGB employed PCPs will be out of network for UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage individual and Group Retiree plans, effective Jan. 1, 2026.

Access for members

UnitedHealthcare members enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Group Retiree PPO plan may still receive care with any MGB PCP as an out-of-network provider

The share of the cost will be the same for Medicare Advantage Group Retiree PPO members as if the PCP was part of the network. We encourage UnitedHealthcare Group Retiree members to speak with their MGB PCP to confirm they’ll continue to see them, regardless of their network status.

For additional information about our Group Retiree plan as well as information on how to find a provider, UnitedHealthcare members should go to retiree.uhc.com.

UnitedHealthcare members who are in the middle of treatment for a serious or complex condition with their PCP who goes out of network are eligible for continuity of care

Continuity of care provides continued in-network benefits for a specified period of time after a provider leaves our network. Some examples of conditions eligible for continuity of care include but are not limited to:

  • People currently in active cancer treatment
  • People in active care for transplant services

UnitedHealthcare members must apply and be approved for continuity of care. They should call the number on their health plan ID card if they need assistance or have questions regarding whether they might be eligible and how to apply.

Our Medicare Advantage members will continue to have access to a broad network of PCPs throughout Massachusetts

UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage and Group Retiree members should call the number on their health plan ID card for assistance finding another PCP that continues to participate in our network. They can also utilize our provider directory on myuhc.com.
