The road to a more simplified, connected health experience
UnitedHealthcare has reimagined its digital experience to better help members understand their benefits and make more informed decisions.
As consumer demand grows for seamless digital experiences across all of their interactions, the healthcare industry is responding. In fact, there are currently more than 300,000 digital health apps available, with 200 new apps added every day.1
Over the years, UnitedHealthcare has worked to transform the member experience by leveraging technology to simplify, personalize and deliver a more connected health care journey. With over 400 digital enhancements launched in 2024 alone, and similar momentum projected for 2025 and 2026,2 the company is reshaping how members interact with their health benefits through its UnitedHealthcare® app and myuhc.com®.
But these efforts really started to ramp up about 5 years ago, when UnitedHealthcare put pedal to the medal in investing in its technology and infrastructure to support innovation at scale. This included integrating core health plan components — like pharmacy, behavioral health and financial accounts — and accelerating a mobile-first approach to align with consumer expectations.
From 2020 to 2022, that meant building out a single front door for members to access their plan and benefits information. In 2023, the focus shifted to driving digital engagement, introducing online claims payments and integrating the UHC Rewards program. By 2024, enhancements like digital ID cards and an improved provider search experience empowered members to find care more easily.
The launch of Smart Choice, which prioritizes provider search results based on quality, coverage and personal preferences, and UHC Store, a new shopping experience offering members discounted health and wellness offerings, mark some of the key enhancements for 2025 in addition to deploying AI-powered technology to help answer member questions. And looking ahead, the focus is on consumer-centricity and transparency — with simplified check-ins, real-time claims processing and greater cost clarity.
The final destination: A digital experience that proactively helps members understand and use their benefits so they can make more informed decisions, access resources that fit their personal health goals and lower costs.
