Anyone traveling internationally may consider an International Travel Medical plan. If you can’t cover the cost of a medical emergency while you’re abroad, these plans are designed to help. If you would also like travel protection for things like delayed flights and trip interruption, consider our International Travel Medical Plus plans.

Standard health insurance typically only works within your home country. So, if you need medical attention while you travel internationally, your health insurance likely will not apply. International Travel Medical plans help cover medical costs when you’re traveling abroad.

If you have a domestic insurance that includes out-of-country benefits, that coverage will normally be your primary insurance and SafeTrip will be your secondary insurance. Contact your primary health insurance company to confirm your coverage on a trip. Secondary insurance, also known as excess insurance, means that if you have other insurance (considered your primary insurance) that might cover a health or travel expense under its coverage, SafeTrip will only be liable for the amount above and beyond what your primary insurance covers. For instance, if you have home insurance that covers the loss of a $600 mobile phone up to $500, SafeTrip would only be responsible for $100 of your loss. These states have exceptions to this rule: MT, NH, ND, SD, UT and VT. Please see each state’s policy document for details.

If SafeTrip is your secondary insurance, you may be required to pay your expenses out-of-pocket, then submit a claim for reimbursement.
