We have partnered with local organizations throughout North Carolina, expanding access to care and supporting programs that address both immediate and long-term health care needs. UnitedHealthcare has invested in numerous initiatives over the past several years, including expanding access to care for underserved communities, addressing food insecurities, affordable housing, and much more.

Ultimately, our goal is to help people live healthier lives while ensuring everyone has access to quality, affordable care where they live. We are focused on reducing barriers, strengthening community resources, and creating opportunities for every North Carolinian to thrive today and into the future.

Ways we're investing in the communities we serve

$4.45 million in ECU Health grants

  • UnitedHealthcare and the UnitedHealth Foundation (UHF) provided ECU Health a $3.2 million grant in 2023 to expand the North Carolina Statewide Telepsychiatry Program (NC-STeP) to provide additional mental health support for underserved youth throughout eastern North Carolina.
  • UnitedHealthcare and UHF also provided ECU Health with a $1.25 million grant in 2021 for the MOTHeRS Project to expand ECU Health’s statewide NC-STeP to deliver multidisciplinary, telehealth-enabled care for women with high-risk pregnancies in rural, eastern North Carolina. This grant integrated maternal-fetal medicine, behavioral health, nutrition and food insecurity interventions into four community-based OB-GYN clinics, reducing access barriers, travel burden and disparities while improving care coordination for underserved populations.
Over $22 million invested in homes
  • UnitedHealth Group has invested more than $22 million since 2020 to support the creation and preservation of over 700 affordable and mixed-income homes for older adults, individuals, and families throughout North Carolina.
Supporting revitalization of the economy
  • UnitedHealth Group provided $270,000 towards the Catawba Vale Collaborative community development project to support the acquisition and redevelopment of a facility to create jobs and revitalize the economy in downtown Old Fort, N.C.
Investing in underserved communities
  • Provided a $275,000 grant funding to three local organizations supporting children in kinship and foster care across the state.
  • Provided a $200,000 grant funding six local organizations supporting children in foster care and transition age youth across the state.
  • Invested $715,000 in UNC Greensboro’s School of Nursing to help expand its goal of providing health care in rural and underserved areas of the state.
  • Invested $750,000 to expand Appalachian Mountain Health’s mobile medical program, which brings comprehensive health services directly to rural communities.
  • Invested $100,000 in nonprofit organization Ripe for Revival to bring fresh produce, meat and dairy to residents across eastern and central North Carolina through a growing fleet of mobile food markets.
Investing in futurehealth care leaders
  • UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of North Carolina has established the UnitedHealthcare Future Leaders in Health Scholarship Program with a $500,000 investment that will benefit 400 students pursuing both short-term credentials and degrees in healthcare across 35 NC Community Colleges.
  • The UnitedHealth Foundation has invested over $600K in the Health Care Scholars United Scholarship Program in North Carolina since 2022, focused on supporting future health care professionals.
