Value‑based care (VBC) is different from fee for service. Providers, including hospitals and physicians, are paid based on patient health outcomes — not the number of services delivered.

Value-based plans are offered through collaborations between UnitedHealthcare and select local health systems, helping to create a more coordinated and proactive care experience. With a focus on prevention and whole‑person health, value-based plans are designed to help support better outcomes and help lower overall costs for employers and employees.

Focused on quality

Value-based plans emphasize quality, evidence‑based care. Providers are encouraged to spend more time understanding employees’ health needs, helping to coordinate care and prevent issues from becoming more complex or costly. This approach may help support better outcomes, higher member satisfaction and lower overall health care costs.

Primary care providers (PCPs) play a central role. Their knowledge of a patient’s health history and goals may help identify health gaps, provide preventive services and guide employees to the right specialists when needed.
