Level2® helps cut costs, aims to improve health for Americans with type 2 diabetes
More than 38 million Americans1 live with type 2 diabetes, making it one of the most prevalent chronic conditions in the United States. Learning to manage the disease can be overwhelming, complicated and costly for people with diabetes — and the health system itself.
But what if there was a way to help people work to improve their condition while also reducing the financial impact associated with type 2 diabetes? That’s what UnitedHealthcare’s Level2 program aims to deliver.
Level2 offers an innovative approach to diabetes care — one that combines technology, personalized support and measurable outcomes to help members work to improve their condition and quality of life, all with the goal of reducing costs.
What is Level2?
Level2 is a solution that can be offered by eligible employers that is designed specifically to support better health for people living with type 2 diabetes. It integrates wearable technology — like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) — with individualized support from a team of doctors, nurses, registered dietitians and coaches. The goal is to equip and empower Level2 members to make more informed lifestyle changes that may lead to improved health.
How does Level2 help reduce health care costs?
A recent analysis2 builds on a growing body of evidence about the value of the Level2 program. The study showed that Level2 was delivering cost savings for employers by supporting better health for employees with type 2 diabetes.
The case study analyzed a large national employer group enrolled in Level2 and found the employer realized 12.8% per member, per month claims savings versus the projected cost trend for the 2024 plan year.
“Level2 is transforming type 2 diabetes care by proving that better health doesn’t have to come at a higher cost,” said Rhonda Randall, D.O., chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare’s commercial business. “We’re seeing real savings for employers and real improvement for members. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”
How does Level2 help lead to better health?
Not only is Level2 helping save money, more importantly the analysis showed it’s helping to improve overall health outcomes. Among the members who joined the program:
- Average GMI (Glucose Management Indicator) reduction: 0.73, where a reduction of 0.5 is considered clinically significant
- 20% fewer inpatient admissions compared to a control group
These results help show that Level2 is helping members work to improve their condition, which may lead to better health and reduced health care utilization.
“When people are empowered with the right tools and support, they can take better control of their health,” Dr. Randall said. “Level2 is helping members better live with their type 2 diabetes, and in many cases, reverse it.”
Level2 continues to redefine what type 2 diabetes care can look like — empowering individuals, improving outcomes, and delivering measurable value. For employers and members alike, Level2 is a path to better health and smarter health care spending.
