What you need to know about Dual Special Needs Plans (DSNPs)
With health care in the news more often than ever, we are never far removed from a conversation that touches this important – and universal – topic. And many Americans are looking for ways to get more from their health coverage in the coming year.
With the Medicare Annual Enrollment period running from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 each year, you or a loved one may be evaluating health plan options, as now is a crucial time for selecting optimal health coverage. And for those with Medicare and Medicaid, you may be surprised to know there is a health plan that offers extra Medicare benefits to support everyday health. These plans are called Dual Special Needs plans, or D-SNPs, for short.
“We want to ensure that individuals with Medicare and Medicaid – and those who care for them – understand the extra benefits they can receive to help them live healthier lives,” said Dr. Alex Billioux, chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare Government Programs. “These plans typically offer benefits like financial help for groceries and everyday essentials, and preventive care, so you can worry less and focus on what really matters: your whole health.”
Here is some information to consider:
- A Dual Special Needs Plan — or D-SNP — is a type of Medicare Advantage plan designed for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid coverage.
- These plans combine Medicare Part A and B benefits, along with prescription drug coverage, and help coordinate benefits with Medicaid.
- D-SNPs may offer extras like dental, vision, and hearing coverage, and even rides to doctor visits. You may also get credits to buy healthy food and over-the-counter items, and help paying utility bills.
- If you have Medicare and Medicaid, need help managing your care, and want more support for your everyday health needs, a D-SNP could be a good fit for you.
